Colombia’s Forgotten City… that Conquistadors never found

Field notes

From the mid-1500s to the late 1600s, Spanish explorers destroyed entire civilizations searching for El Dorado—melting down billions in gold. But there was one massive, mountain-top citadel hidden deep in the jungles of Colombia that they never found: The Lost City of Teyuna. Older than Machu Picchu, this is the story of the Tairona, their fierce standing army, and the mysterious pan-American WereJaguar cult.

While the Inca and Aztecs are household names, the Tairona civilization supported over 250,000 people with advanced engineering, sprawling stone staircases, complex aqueducts, and some of the finest gold-smithing work ever discovered on Earth. When Carbon-14 dating was deployed at the site, it shocked archaeologists: Teyuna was built around 500-600 AD, making it nearly 1,000 years older than Machu Picchu.

In this episode, we explore how this advanced society successfully repelled Spanish colonization for over a century using poison-tipped arrows and brilliant tactical traps, forcing the Spanish to launch a devastating scorched-earth campaign in 1600. We also look at the fascinating connection between the Tairona’s Jaguar shamanism and the broader pan-American “WereJaguar” phenomenon found across Mesoamerica and even the American Southeast.
